There are currently 28 states in the Republic of India. All the states have governments directly elected by the people. They consist of the bigger states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan etc. to the tiny states of Goa, Mizoram etc. The cultural diversity among the states are so diverse and unique. Truly this makes India a remarkable country.
There are 7 Union Territories in India as of now. Two of them viz. Pondicherry and National Capital Territory of Delhi have elected legislatures while the other 5 are governed directly by the Central Government. The head of these territories are appointed by the President of India.
